Syracuse is located near the intersection of two major Interstates and its airport is the largest in the region. With this prime location it is not a surprise that the city has functioned as a major crossroads over the last two centuries, first between the Erie Canal and its branch canals, then between the railway networks. Syracuse is also home to a Little Italy, a neighborhood with Italian origins, which has several blocks of bakeries, restaurants, pizzerias, shops, and services. In the University Hill area, Marshall Street, along with its terminus South Crouse Avenue, is lined with stores, bars, and restaurants, primarily to cater to the student population on "The Hill", as well as the over 25,000 people who work there daily.
